HISTORIC
BUFFALO ZOO GATES DESIGNED BY AFRICAN AMERICAN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT/ARCHITECT
LISTED AS LANDMARK
Buffalo Zoo Gates Nominated to National Register of Historic Places
San Antonio,
Texas, March 26, 2013 - The National Register of Historic Places nomination for
the “Entrance Court at the Buffalo Zoo”, produced by two Texas architects, was
approved on March 21 by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation
(State Review Board) for state landmark designation. The nomination will be
forwarded to the prestigious National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
administered by the National Park Service. In 1935 Buffalo African American
architect and landscape architect, John Edmonston Brent AIA, designed gates
number three (original #7) and four (original #1) at the Buffalo Zoo, the third
oldest zoo in America. Nationally recognized consultants Everett L. Fly FASLA
and Ellen P. Hunt AIA researched, interpreted and prepared the NRHP nomination.
“The
existence of such a strategic landscape composition at such a prominent public
facility, documented by original drawings produced by an African American
landscape architect and architect of the pre-World War II era, is extremely rare
and nationally significant” said landscape architect and architect Everett Fly.
Only four
other African American architects, or landscape architects, are known to have
designed prominent municipal facilities in the United States prior to World War
II. Everett L. Fly discovered seventeen original drawings of zoo projects
prepared by Mr. Brent in March of 2012 while working on the Michigan Street
African American Heritage Corridor project. Fly met with Buffalo Zoo
President/CEO, Dr. Donna Fernandes, and her staff to compare historical
documentation and explore the feasibility of placing the gates on the National
Register of Historic Places. Collaborating with Ms. Hunt, Fly went on to locate
a total of forty original Brent drawings. Fly and Hunt formed a relationship
with Mr. Brent’s descendants who shared additional historical documentation and
accounts. Fly and Hunt invested more than five hundred hours to research and
interpret documentation necessary to prepare a complete NRHP nomination in
December, 2012.
“Mr. Brent’s
life and accomplishments are exemplary. There are universal lessons in every
aspect of his life.” said Everett Fly.
If you would

Fly and Ellen Hunt, please call 210/826-4440 or e-mail Mr. Fly at
